American Kitsch

Today was a day of unusual stops.  It started with a visit to the SPAM museum in Austin, Minn. Did you know there are 13 different flavors of SPAM? Or that there have been over 8 BILLION cans of SPAM consumed? You do now. It was a fun museum that didn't take itself too seriously.

The next stop was to the Jolly Green Giant in some no name town in Minn. Why this small town paid thousands of dollars to erect a jolly green giant completely baffled me. And having looked between the giant's legs, I think it best the giant stay away from NC bathrooms until HB2 is overturned.

In Mitchel, SD we stopped by the one and only Corn Palace. It is a combination concert hall and basketball arena decorated with 250000 ears of corn.  The locals affectionately refer to it as the world's largest bird feeder. It is actually quite cool. Every year they tear down the corn murals and put up new ones. This year's theme was Rock and Roll so Elvis and Willie were immortalized in corn.

We ended the day with a visit to an active archaeological dig of a thousand year old Indian village. We were the only ones there (everyone else was looking for green giants) so got a very good personal tour.  May my garbage be as interesting to future generations as theirs is to these archaeologists.
1500 miles traveled and Custer's only complaint is kamikaze bugs and birds.

  1. Joseph and I lave Spam, but of course we don't brag about it. I will probably be looking for the green giant like everyone else, that is pretty impressive.

  2. Why do I think Karla had nothing to do with planning this day. Did you pick Chevy Chase up along the way?

  4. Actually (though I kind of hate to admit it) I'm the one who found the Spam museum. I couldn't resist that Austin was nicknamed Spam City (even though it was Austin, Minnesota instead of Austin, Tx it made me laugh).
