Made it to Montana

We did a little more touring before we left Rapid City, South Dakota. One of the things we liked there is an 8 block section downtown where all of the former Presidents have their own bronze statue. It was interesting to see how many we could recognize.

And once again I was amazed that no one try to deface any of the statues. In this case I think part of the reason may be because they took an alley downtown and called it "Art Alley" and let folks graffiti the alley all they want. Like the tunnel at NCState. And some of the art was good.

Most of today was a driving day.  We passed the geographic center of the US on our way to North Dakota and then on into Montana. Along the way we stopped at Pompeys Pillar which is a 200 foot limestone tower that Clark (of Lewis and Clark) defaced by carving in his name and date (1806).  Because it is the only surviving physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark expedition, it is now a National Monument and we got a stamp in our Parks book for visiting it!

We got to Billings Montana late in the afternoon and took a short hike on the rim ridge overlooking the town.  This is Big Sky country and we could see rain and lightning coming our way so cut our hike short.

Custer has now traveled over 2500 miles on this journey. And visited another town named after him in Montana

  1. President guesses:
    (1) FDR was reasonably straightforward.
    (2) Based on the pen/paper, is the second one Jefferson?

Thanks for including the "geographic center" marker text, as I was befuddled how something in South Dakota could be the center of anything, but I was thinking lower 48 only.

  2. You are correct on your presidents. I guess I should have included some of the tougher ones. Some of bronzes had nice touches - FDR with leg braces, Carter with a peanut at his feet, etc.
